Our Patron Saint - St Clare of Assisi
**St. Clare of Assisi** (1194–1253) was an Italian saint, one of the first followers of St. Francis of Assisi, and the founder of the Order of Poor Ladies, later known as the Poor Clares. Born Chiara Offreduccio in Assisi, Italy, she grew up in a wealthy and noble family. Despite her privileged upbringing, she was deeply drawn to a life of prayer and simplicity.
Early Life
Clare was inspired by the teachings and example of St. Francis of Assisi, who preached about poverty, humility, and a life devoted to Christ. At the age of 18, Clare secretly left her family home to join Francis. She renounced her wealth, cut her hair as a sign of commitment, and adopted a simple habit.
Founding of the Poor Clares
St. Clare established a religious community for women who wished to live according to the Franciscan ideals of poverty and prayer. The Poor Clares embraced a life of strict poverty, abstaining from all ownership of property and relying entirely on alms. Clare became the abbess of the community and guided it with wisdom and compassion.
She was known for her deep humility, unwavering faith, and commitment to a life of prayer. Clare also wrote the *Rule of Life* for her order, the first known religious rule written by a woman, which was eventually approved by the pope.
Miracles and Legacy
Clare is remembered for her miracles, including the time she repelled invading soldiers with nothing but the power of her prayers and the Eucharist. She was also a healer and intercessor, with many seeking her aid.
St. Clare died on August 11, 1253, and was canonized just two years later, in 1255, by Pope Alexander IV. Her feast day is celebrated on August 11. She is the patron saint of television, the Order of St. Clare (the Poor Clares), eye disease, goldsmiths, and laundry.
Her legacy lives on through the Poor Clares, who continue to live lives of prayer, poverty, and devotion to God.
